Through the Tunnel by Argolith Through the Tunnel by Argolith
A few days ago I was out to shoot some pictures for my Vienna City Life series, and when I came across this building I instantly thought of doing something a bit more abstract than my usual pictures. This is the result. What do you think about the composition, the exposure, and the intense contrast? Constructive criticism is always welcome.

Vienna, Austria

Tamron SP AF 11-18 mm F/4.5-5.6 Di-II LD Aspherical lens

I think this is a good way to work, it's very graphic and a very interesting composition. The work of black and white in this context recall some films like Fritz Lang's Metropolis

I composed it this way because otherwise it would probably have been a boring shot. :)

Thank you for commenting.

I really enjoy the surreal feeling of this picture. The deep darkness of the building, which is continuing undilutedly almost to the very brink of the walls seems the only logic option contrasting to the reflecting windows.
This high contrast adds to the symmetry of the picture which, at first sight, seemed like an optical illusion to me.
In fact, I was wondering several seconds whether it was mirrored. :)
I think it's an exceptional shot and the fact that we don't see the space these dark walls are
gravitating towards adds to the "mystical"/obscure atmosphere.

(PS: From your personal experience, how do you feel about the Canon EOS 1000D? :)
I'm planning to buy the 500D, to which the 1000D, of course, is a slightly cheaper alternative.
However I was told numerous times that, in comparison, it's got a less expandable feature set.
All these technical details are well confusing!)

Thanks you for the kind words and the :+fav:. The symmetry of this building was what I found intriguing enough to take this picture.

I'm quite happy with my EOS 1000D. Unfortunately, I can't compare it to the 500D because I've never used this model. It's possible that the 500D has a better image sensor, resulting in less noise (I rarely set the ISO on my 1000D to 800 or above because of the noise). What you'll need, of course, is a good lens because the Canon kit lens (EF-S 18-55 mm IS) is not that awesome.

Youre' really welcome. :)

Hmm. I do already own an ("analogue") tele lens,
which I intend on using since I read that you can
mostly use them on digital cameras as well.
I don't know that much about lenses, though.
What's bad about the kit lens?

Well, if it fits on the camera, you can use it, I guess.

It's a general purpose lens, covering the range from medium wide angle to moderate tele. It's pretty hard to compensate all the aberrations of such a lens over its full range of focal lengths... And for a price of like 100 bucks, it's impossible. :)

So you can't expect the same image quality that you would get from a more expensive lens.

Thank you.

Yes, it's indeed quite similar. What I don't like that much about your picture is that the sunlight which hits two of the walls near the top breaks the symmetry. Otherwise it's a very nice shot.
